This Weekend on Casey Kasem’s Top 40 Countdown
Saturday’s 80’s Countdown: AUGUST 15, 1981
8 am – noon
One of the biggest news stories in 1981 was the attempted assassination of US President Ronald Reagan, who was shot by John Hinckley. Reagan also made news by firing over 11,000 air traffic controllers after they refused to go back to work. On television, MTV premiered and in the summer of 1981 on the radio, Casey’s Top 40 countdown included songs by the Commodores and Phil Collins.
Sunday’s 70’s Countdown: AUGUST 11, 1973
8 am – 11 am
A global recession was underway in 1974 with inflation running at 12%. If you were making an average salary, this would have been $14,000 a year. Perhaps surprisingly, the average life expectancy in 1974 was just 72 years. Richard Nixon resigned while Paper Lace and George McCrae were two of the rising stars featured in Casey’s countdown from this week in the summer of 1974.
