An Olympic bronze medalist from New Brunswick has had her confidential therapeutic information leaked by Russian hacker. The hacker group Fancy Bear stole files from the World Anti-Doping Agency and has been releasing personal information about athletes that were granted exemptions to take normally banned substances. Fredericton’s Catherine Pendrel, a mountain biker who won bronze in Rio, is one of 41 athletes to have there therapeutic exemption information leaked. Pendrel was granted permission to use a pain killer while undergoing surgery on a broken thumb. The Russian hackers are releasing information about athletes that received exemption in retaliation for Russian Athletes banned from the Rio Olympics after a Russian state sponsored doping program came to light.
