In the mid-60’s Montreal born singer/songwriter Andy Kim was one of many struggling musicians trying to make it. In 1968 he teamed up with Jeff Barry to write a song for “The Archies” animated TV series. That song was “Sugar, Sugar”. Everyone thought they had a big hit on their hands, but initial reaction from programmers was sour, due to the song’s association with a kids cartoon series. A radio station in San Francisco the track a chance, and the song gained momentum. “Sugar, Sugar” became the biggest hit of 1969, spending 4 weeks at #1 in the US, 8 weeks on top in the UK and #1 in Canada. Andy Kim only sang back-up vocals on the song, but his career would soon take off, peeking in 1974 with his own chart-topper “Rock Me Gently”.
